When designing the kitchen, accessibility and safety are the key issues.  It is important to allow easy access to: food prep area near the stove, stored cooking utensils close to stove, stove top, oven, sink, food items, appliances, outlets, switches, ect...
  • To achieve these you need to consider the height of: countertop, storage space, upper cabinets, appliances, switches, and outlets.
  • Roll under access is frequently needed for the following: food prep area, sink, and stovetop.
  • The spatial requirements are dependent on the person's abilities and their assistive device.
  • Storage may be enhanced by full extension drawers, pull down shelving, and appropriate depth shelving.
The design and layout are critical to the performance of the kitchen.  This room can be very dangerous.  Through proper design, home owners will be able to avoid carrying knives and hot items in their lap, and avoid struggling to manipulate pots and pans around the stove. This planning will decrease the probability of cut or burn injuries.
